Eight Maine Arts Teachers “Dream Big” for Fellowship Projects

The Maine Alliance for Arts Education and the Maine Community Foundation have announced the 2008 recipients of the Maine Arts Teachers Fellowship Program (MATF). Now in its second year, the program supports the personal artistic development of Maine K-12 teachers in all arts disciplines, and gives these arts educators the opportunity to interact with professional artists in their fields.

MATF asks Maine’s arts teachers to “dream big” in following their own artistic voice. Recognizing that teachers often lack the time and resources needed to connect with the artistic process in a deep and sustained way, the program provides grants of up to $4,000 to enable selected teachers to make these important connections. An additional $1,000 grant is awarded to each Fellow's school to support related post-Fellowship activities.

This year’s class of eight Fellows embodies that spirit of dreaming big while exploring their artistic voices. The recipients are:

Melinda Campbell, Fairview School, Auburn
Ms Campbell will travel to central Italy to study the classical Italian landscape and learn new painting techniques under the tutelage of Nina Weiss, a Chicago-based landscape artist.

Joe Farrell, King Middle School, Portland
Mr. Farrell will attend the Cordoba Guitar Festival in Cordoba, Spain, to study classical, jazz and flamenco guitar with artists such as Pat Metheny, Jayme Marques, and Manolo Sanlucar.

Kathleen Hartley, Bangor High School
Ms Hartley will study ceramic tile and drum-making with artist Frank Giorgini.

Cheryl Herr-Rains, Gardiner Area High School
Ms Herr-Rains will be developing skills in ceramic sculpture through a workshop with artist Richard Notkin at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado.

Marguerite Lawler-Rohner, Cape Elizabeth Middle School
Ms Lawler-Rohner will study painting with Jeremy Foss from the Massachusetts College of Art and with professors from the International School of Drawing and Painting in Umbria, Italy.

Paul LeBrun, Skowhegan Area High School
As a “Second Life” designer, Mr. LeBrun will create an on-line interactive digital art space to foster artistic collaboration and student involvement.

Lynda McCann-Olson, Drowne & Memorial Schools, MSAD #51, Cumberland
Ms McCann-Olson will develop craftsmanship and design innovation in Precious Metal Clay and traditional jewelry making during a workshop with artist Celie Fago, and conduct independent study with metalsmith Pauline Warg. She will also attend the fourth biennial international Precious Metal Clay conference at Purdue University.

Rebecca Wheeler, Windham Primary School
Ms Wheeler will study the art of encaustics on clay through a mentorship and a workshop at the Maine College of Art with artist Kim Bernard.

MATF is modeled after the New York City-based Surdna Foundation’s Arts Teachers Fellowship Program. The Surdna Foundation and individual Maine Community Foundation donors have provided the financial support to launch the Maine program.
